If you long for a place of peaceful solitude, if you love alpine hamlets, if you yearn for the zen of fishing, mountain biking, rafting, kayaking, backpacking, horseback riding, nordic skiing, snowshoeing or simply relaxing with a good book, you are sure to love Stanley, ID.
True that this tiny hamlet survives largely through tourism, but Stanley is not your ordinary tourist destination, and run-of-the-mill tourists are not drawn to it. First, nestled between the Sawtooth and White Cloud Ranges, 3+ hours on winding mountain roads from Boise, (or 60 mountainous minutes from Ketchum,) Stanley is not easily accessible. Second, the town itself is simple and rustic. But for those who are not off-put by such matters of the familiar and the comfortable, Stanley offers a magical treat. With magnificent daytime views and outdoor playground in every direction, with the still of dark starry nights and the calm that comes with vast natural landscapes, and most notably, with easy access to 100 miles of the carefully protected wilderness along the Salmon River, Stanley offers an oasis for those who wish to commune with the rugged expanse of nature and escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life.
