Belfast, Maine

Sitting on Penobscot Bay, at the mouth of the Passagassawakeag River, the town of Belfast has a long and varied history, including fur-trading post, lucrative shipbuilding and shoe manufacturing center, seafood and poultry-processing hubs. In the mid-1970s the poultry business collapsed, aggravating an already depressed economy and fueling a declining population.

But every problem has its silver lining and in the case of Belfast, the depressed economy of the 70s and 80s, coupled with a fervent “back to land” movement in this mid-coast region of Maine, made room for young, creative, and ecologically-minded folks to move in and set roots, initiating new vibrancy and culture to the dying community.

These days, Belfast is flourishing with a thriving arts scene, 2 restaurants that are solely focused on farm to table fare, a strong eco-village initiative, a marvelous food co-op,  a exquisite bed and breakfast resurrected from what was once “skid row” housing, an outstanding fabric and crafts store, and all in all, a dynamic and vibrant, living community. A trip to this once industrial-harbor town will greet you with all those things most important to our souls: natural beauty and outdoor recreation, great food, art and creativity, and warm hearted people.
