Vernon Electric Cooperative has been in business since 1936 when local farmers got together to bring electricity to the countryside so they, their families and neighbors could have the same advantages as their urban counterparts.
Today Vernon Electric Cooperative provides reliable electricity to its members and communities as their resource for reliable electricity at fair and reasonable prices with superior customer service and innovative energy solutions. Vernon Electric does this with accountability, integrity and a commitment to community.
In 1935 FDR created the REA (Rural Electrification Administration) so rural folks could start their own electric utilities using low-interest loans from the Federal Government. Prior to this time, investor-owned utilities would not extend power lines into the countryside because there was no profit to be made. This holds true even to this day. If it were not for electric cooperatives, the rural countryside would still not have access to central-station electrical power.
Vernon Electric Cooperative provides electricity and other services to approximately 10,000 members in Southwestern Wisconsin. Besides Vernon County, VEC also serves parts of La Crosse, Monroe, Juneau, Sauk, Richland and Crawford Counties. Its service territory consists primarily of the rural areas and the Village of Readstown.
A ten-member board oversees the policies of the cooperative and is responsible for the hiring of a CEO/General Manager. Each board member is elected by his/her fellow members from their District. The Board fairly represents all areas of the cooperative’s service territory.
There are many advantages to being a member of an electric co-op, but one of the best advantages is VEC is service driven. As a cooperative, VEC operates as a not-for-profit organization. This means that after all the bills are paid, any money left over is returned to the members.
Vernon Electric Cooperative works together with other electric cooperatives across the nation to create a national brand called Touchstone Energy. When you are working with a Touchstone Energy Cooperative you know you are working with an organization that puts members first and holds itself to the highest business standards.
